Making something out of nothing: The story of Wurih Brewery Tourism Street
By Chang Zheng-xing, Director-General of the Taichung County High Speed Rail Culture & Tourism Development Association
Translated by Ann Lee
As the Director-General of the High Speed Rail Culture & Tourism Development Association, I take pride in my duty to the residents of Wurih Township. Being Wurih-born, I've gotten to experience the beauty of this area myself, and grow ever-excited about its future prospects. After hosting two consecutive Wurih Beer Culture & Tourism Festivals, I believed that forming a Wurih Brewery Tourism Street would be just as successful as the celebrations.
Some people responded, "No way! That could only happen in your dreams!" To counter their negativity, I always think about my mother and her perseverance through adversity. As recent as 50 or 60 years ago in Taiwan, hardly anyone had anything; yet, with pride and resourcefulness, people were able to achieve all kinds of things, without much to begin with. With this attitude, we forged ahead with plans for the tourism street.
For the first phase of the Wurih Brewery Tourism Street, the High Speed Rail Culture & Tourism Development Association spent a year planning its location, touring the sites, and inviting businesses owners to collaborate in a research and discussion seminar that would decide the street's hot spots. The free Wudalong Tour Bus, which stops in Wurih, Dadu and Longjing, has finally been approved, is financially supported by the Taichung County Government, and in operation since April. To celebrate the Wudalong Travel Guide Second Edition (NT$99), published by our association, it is being sold for a discount price of NT$59 on the Wurih Brewery Tourism Street.
As the planning continued, however, we were met with unexpected setbacks. Just when everything seemed to be coming together nicely, the project faced a money shortage problem. To our endless gratitude, there were friends who pitched in to help out. Their assistance made it possible to start work on the tourism street in August.
Start August 22, every Friday to Sunday, the kilometer-long GuangHua Street will be temporarily shut down for some future project construction. A series of festive events will take place to celebrate the opening of the tourism street, including the Wudalong Tourism Ambassador Contest and the 3rd Annual Wurih Beer Culture & Tourism Festival. I personally welcome you to visit Wurih and enjoy these exciting events with us!
