Aqua Restaurant is prime example of what makes Taichung's dining scene a wonderland for residents and out-of-towners alike. This large, stunning monument to modern architecture is a feast for the eyes inside and outside, resembling a swank establishment in Miami or other tropical city. Take a look at the menu, however, and you'll discover that--amazingly--meals start in the NT$200 range and don't even break the NT$600 mark. The minamalist-design building is surrounded by five large pools and trees, giving it a tropical feel. The high-ceilinged interior is full of polished white stone, long brown drapes and squarish dark-wood tables, including a long table by the entrance that actually can double as a catwalk. One whole wing is set aside as a smoking section and there is outdoor seating, plus a 25-person VIP room in the all-white upstairs. A 40-person function room can also handle meetings. The executive chef--formerly of The Landis Taichung, Ritz Landis and Caesar Park Hsinchu hotels--has designed a lunch/dinner/teatime menu that ranges from basic Western, Japanese-style, Chinese and Southeast Asian style rice and noodle/pasta dishes (starting at NT$260) to steaks, hot pots, sandwiches and teppanyaki selections. Smaller, lighter "Pink Meal" selections also cater to the ladies. Beverages include the recommended Espresso Tea (made in an espresso machine), French Hediard-brand teas, a unique two-meter-high, 2,000cc glass beer dispenser (NT$750) and various cocktails.
