In an ever-changing nightlife scene, every city has at least one legendary pub--one that opened years ago and remains as popular as ever. In Tainan, that pub is the Cosby Saloon. Now Taichung residents get a chance to find out for themselves what makes Cosby a classic. Located near the Science Park, Cosby Saloon boasts a log cabin-style exterior and wood-beam interior. The decor and menu is all Americana, with a heavy emphasis on old motorcycles, a personal love of owner Robert. The food is excellent, especially for the price and huge portions. The Road King Burger (路王漢堡, NT$250) is a 1/3-pound patty of meat, trimmings and, bacon, all mounted on a whole wheat bun (specially made for Cosby). Other recommendations include the Bratwurst Sausage Hot Dog (德式香腸熱狗, NT$170) and the New York Strip Steak (NT$470). Completing the picture is American Root Beer (NT$90), Ginger Ale (NT$80) and real beers (NT$110 and up). The service is especially good, with the staff trained in Tainan. Bar patrons are often surprised to find that the staff remember their name and drink. After your filling meal, be sure to wash it down with (what else?) a shot of Jack Daniels. --By Donovan Smith , translated by Ann Lee
