In Sanyi, a town filled with foggy mountains, the Crescent Phoenix opened up a new branch next to the old mountain paths. With a ten-meter wall and simple architectural design, the building blends right in with its natural surroundings; although it looks large from the outside, the inside is cozy and colorful. Inside, the tasteful tables and chairs match beautifully with red hibiscus flowers from Miaoli--these red flowers really tie the restaurant together.
The decor ideas came from the owner, who wanted a place that reminded her of her nostalgic childhood in Miaoli and the blanket of hibiscus she saw while walking home from school everyday; these flowers were the first living things to welcome her home. As children she and her friends would compete to see how many of the red blooms they could fit on their palms. Now, thirty years later, the hibiscus still has a large place in her heart.
Crescent Phoenix has four branches located around Taichung's art museum and the new branch in Sanyi is not too different from the other ones. Like in the other locations, the menu offerings include a variety of Chinese and a handful of Western dishes. The restaurant's theme is "encounter, conflict, chaos, fusion". This mantra of-sort represents everything at the restaurant--from the food and the architecture to the Taiwanese owner and her Canadian husband, everything here is a mix of East and West. The new Crescent Phoenix team is made up of people from all over; there are Hakka people, local Taiwanese, and even a French chef! Together they share culture and food. And now they want to share it with you.
