Spring is the best time of year to explore the great outdoors. At Taichung County's Toubiankeng Leisure Park and Jiutong Mountain, spring brings with it the loquat season, which in turn fills up the local restaurants with eager tourists enjoying the garden goods the area restaurants offer.

Fu Shi Yuan serves several kinds of red tilapia fish dishes, which attract people from all over. Their made-to-order Fresh Tilapia Hot Pot (鮮魚火鍋NT$280) comes with rice and black tea. Steamed Tilapia, another great dish, is full of fresh flavors and tender meat.

This garden-style cafe sells a variety of cuisine, like the Healthy Vegetarian Hot Pot (藥膳素食鍋 NT$320), which is filled with nutritional Chinese medicinal ingredients. Most meals come with a bowl of brown rice and iced black or green tea. With a set meal, you get a beverage at half-price, so you can enjoy anything on the menu like Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice (NT$130) or the Tangerine and Lemon Vinegar Drink (金桔檸檬醋NT$160). Afternoon tea selections are NT$200 and include a coffee or juice (NT$150), plus cake or handmade cookies. In addition, you can try their Glutinous Rice Cake (養生紫米糕NT$90), which is made with dried longan fruit and popular dish among guests.

Besides improving the area's aesthetic appeal, the 200 coffee trees planted near Cui Gu Coffee House are also very functional. If you like coffee, try their own Signature Coffee (NT$200), which comes with their home-grown banana chips. On weekends, groups of tourists love coming here to enjoy their barbecued selections, which include fish, pork, and chicken drumsticks & wings. The BBQ meal comes with a bowl of rice and soup for only NT$299.

In his open-air restaurant, Chef Gao has created 12 new dishes that start at NT$580. All of the ingredients in every dish are fresh and/or homemade and the menu changes with the seasons. One treat available all year long is the savory Taro Cake. Tasty appetizers here include Tomato Salad, Bacon Rolls, and Japanese Fried Tofu. Other recommendations include Au Gratin Baked Crabs, Mushrooms with Sicilian Sea Salt, Grilled Codfish, Fried Prawns, and Japanese-style Grilled Pork with Sukiyayki Sauce. The 12 new dishes are only available weekdays, so reservations are mandatory.

This unique rock-climbing establishment is located on the third floor of a building in Taiping. If you come to climb, admission is NT$150/person for the entire day. On the first floor, there is a small restaurant, a hand-painted cloth store, and dainty accommodations for guests. In the restaurant, the owner, Mr. Huang, shares his passion for tea and coffee in specialties like cappucinos and lattes (NT$140/each). Their Cabbage and Leek Dumplings come with a bowl of soup for NT$80. Hand-painted head scarves, which are sold at the back of the restaurant, are crafted by Mrs. Huang.

Xing Ye Cafe is located on the peak of Keg Mountain (Jiutong Shan). Besides the fantastic view, hungry visitors can enjoy a variety of hot pots, such as the Italian-style Cream and Pumpkin Pot (with pork, NT$280), or the specially-made Korean Kimchi Pot (NT$280), which is great with a bowl of steamed rice. Popular items here include their Signature Plum Coffee (Hot, NT$180) and Spicy Bean Curd (NT$60). One new dish, the Japanese-style Almond & Cream Cake (NT$150), would be great for a Japanese Valentine's Day treat.
