BABA'S Mediterranean Kitchen
134, ZhongMing South Rd
Macedonian native Peter Nesovski has opened this interesting little place right near the intersection with GongYi Road, offering a delicious, low-priced selection of cuisine that is common across the Mediterranean, southeastern Europe and the Balkans. Nesovski owned a restaurant in Macedonia before coming to Taiwan and marrying a Taichung native. His Mediterranean Meals & Salads (NT$120-250) set meals all come with salad, fries (chips) or rice and soup, plus a main course like the mozzarella-covered Cheese (beef) Patty, Cheese Chicken Steak, or Mediterranean Salad with feta cheese. Be sure and sample the three french fries varieties (NT$40-50), covered in either feta cheese, sour cream, or mayonnaise, ketchup and oregano. For dessert, savor the Roll Pancakes (NT$50)--rolled-up crepes filled with banana and chocolate and other flavors. There are very cheap sodas, beers (NT$60-80) and coffees. Baba's also offers 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. deliveries in the area, plus take-out. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Ann Lee
A. Baba's Stuffed Pepper (NT$180 with salad, soup and bun) is a real treat, enjoyed in many Mediterranean countries, with rice and spices baked inside a big pepper.
B. Although they're made with U.S. beef, Baba's three beef burgers (served with fries and soda) are not your typical American burgers, made instead with different spices and other ingredients for a uniquely-tasty flavor common to southeastern Europe.
