Driving to the northern end of Chongde Road will take you into Fengyuan city. This is the home of Ba Jiou Bean Jelly Cafe, surrounded by a spacious courtyard. The Ba Jiou chain is known around Taiwan for selling naturally-fermented hot and cold bean jelly treats. However, the Fengyuan branch also includes a cafe offering vegetarian-style dishes like Cumin Fried Rice (NT$60), Stinky Tofu (set meal NT$120), and Salty Bean Jelly (aka "Tofu Brain", NT$25). During holidays, Ba Jiou Cafe also provides a good selection of cakes and pastries, including Ba Jiou Moon Cakes during Moon Festival, popular pineapple cakes, and assorted traditional Chinese-style stuffed-meat and vegetarian-style wedding cakes. --By Niang Chen, translated by Ann Lee
A. Ba Jiou's location conveniently connects it to Taichung, Tanzih township and Fengyuan city. It includes a spacious front courtyard, dining area, a section selling small artifacts, and a landscaped garden area. Whether you're looking for a break from your travels, or just finished a long bike ride on the Tanyashen Green Bikeway, this cafe makes a great stop-off where you can treat yourself to a freshly-brewed cappuccino while enjoying the scenic landscape and some food.
B. Thin Noodles with Sesame Oil Mushrooms (NT$250) are made with fresh straw mushrooms. Besides the natural savory flavors of the mushrooms, the sesame oil mixed in with the thin noodles will warm you right up, making this a perfect winter dish.
