Peppery Artisan is a chain restaurant that started off in southern Taiwan but has expanded into Taichung, offering a variety of dishes including spicy hot pots, braised dishes and so-called "dragon's bone" hot pot. This uniquely-named hot pot style is prepared by cooking pork bones in soup for over 10 hours in order to capture their essence. This soup base is then mixed with milk and seasoned with salt, so that it is not only very nutritious but also adds a lot of calcium to your diet. This popular hot pot is usually served with thin meat slices and vegetables that provide slightly salty and sweet flavors. --By Niang Chen, translated by Ann Lee
A. The Healthy Dragon Bone Hot Pot Set (NT$120) and Kimchi Hot Pot Set (NT$120) are both popular dishes at Peppery Artisan. With such affordable prices, one can enjoy a delicious hot pot meal without worrying about spending too much. All hot pots come with a plate of side ingredients like handmade fish dumplings, pork dumplings, egg dumplings, sticky rice sticks, crab sticks, tempura and meat slices. The restaurant's signature Kimchi Hot Pot is quite spicy but also exudes a sweeter flavor unlike other hot pots. A la carte dishes include Wasabi-flavored Pork Balls (NT$50), which also can be added to your choice of hot pot. The Dutch-style Potato Noodles (MT$30) are made from a Dutch brand of potato starch and have a crystal-clear, smooth texture that goes with any dish. Another popular side dish, the Superior Quality Beef Balls (NT$90) are made with fresh beef and various spices.
B. The Spicy Yuen-Yang Hot Pot (NT$150) features a soup base cooked with 18 different Chinese medicinal ingredients. Despite the soup's mild flavor, it provides a warming sensation once consumed. Other side dishes great with this particular pot are the mashed squid or shrimp in bamboo tube (NT$70), both exclusive menu items at Peppery Artisan.
