Eating and shopping through Wenhuadao Market

Eating and shopping through Wenhuadao Market

By Niang Chen
Translated by Angel Pu

Eating and shopping through Wenhuadao MarketNot far from Taichung's very popular, extremely "renao" ("hot and noisy") Fengjia Night Market is Wenhua Road, where the Wenhuadao Market can be found. In stark contrast to the night market, this much quieter, classy-looking development--with In One City Inn hotel located in its upper floors--exudes an almost-Parisien atmosphere with warm street lights, attractive boutiques and eateries.

There are all sorts of shops and eateries at Wenhuadao Market, including a nail salon, graphic design studio, stores selling musical instruments and clothing, a chocolate shop, and burger joint. One of the market's most unique features is a statue of the Phra Phrom deity from Thailand jointly brought back by Taiyifang Thai Art Crafts and Huaxin Flower Shop and placed in the central square. The little gold-foil elephants surrounding the statue are gifts from the worshippers whose wishes were granted.

Following are some of the other Wenhuadao Market eating/drinking places to check out.

The life experience of the owner himself is as rich as the chocolate sold here. “The best temperature to eat chocolate and red wine is also the most comfortable temperature for human bodies--both 18 degrees Celsius,” says owner James, whose life philosophy can be observed in the way he introduces his products. The chef only uses ingredients imported from France, Belgium and Germany to make signature products like the creamy Brownie (NT$80/ 160g) and solid-textured Chocolate Rock (NT$25 apiece). The Raspberry Chocolate (NT$100/ 100g) contains fresh fruit, allowing you to savor the sweetness of chocolate and sourness of fresh fruit in one bite. The Truffle Chocolate (NT$25/piece) is so smooth that it begins melting as soon as it hits your mouth. The Bitter & Sweet Chocolate (NT$25/ piece) is rich in tannins and cocoa bean fat. After the bitterness passes through your throat, there is a growing aftertaste that strongly resembles a high-quality coffee.

12, Lane 150, WenHua Rd, Xitun District
Hours: 8 am-10 pm

Youthful owner Cheng Guan-wu, who has been a coffee professional for eight years, admits that he felt worried about business at his shop at first because, although Wenhuadao Market is near Fenjia Night Market, the two areas resemble totally different worlds. In the end, he believes that people will be drawn by good coffee and service. He is also happy to introduce the right way to drink coffee. Take the Ice Cafe Latte (NT$80, NT50 take-out) for example: First, taste the creamy foam flavor, then drink the espresso to stimulate your tastebuds before finally mixing the two layers together to enjoy your delicious iced latte. Other coffee drinks such as the cappuccino, caramel macchiato and espresso start at NT$40.
