By Niang Chen

Beiping Road is undoubtedly one of Taichung's biggest clusters of small, reasonably-priced restaurants. Besides the places you may have heard of before, there are even more dining gems waiting to be discovered along this road and connecting lanes and alleys.

While dining here, you can savor the freshness of the ingredients, smell the aromatic flavors of the soup stock, and laugh at the jokes that owner Hua-Hua tells. This small place offers 70-80 stew ingredients (NT$10-30), including pig-blood cakes, seaweed, bean curd sheets, okra, balsam pears, pork liver, and wood-ear mushrooms.

Hours: 11 am-2 pm, 5-8 pm
(closed Sundays)

"You can achieve whatever you want, as long as you work hard," says the owner here, who worked in the hardware industry but decided to open a restaurant because of his passion for food. One of the unique features that distinguishes this place from other Beiping Road restaurants is its high-end atmosphere. Popular dishes include Milk Chicken with Garlic (NT$110), Stir-Fried Seafood and Beef (NT$160), and Salted Fish (NT$150). Seafood with Cashew Nuts (NT$170) contains various ingredients such as squid, salmon, tuna, shrimp, onions, celery, mushrooms, and a handful of cashew nuts. Salmon Fried Rice (NT$90) is very appetizing, thanks to the high-quality salmon. Boneless Chicken Leg (NT$100) is flavorful, crispy, and goes well with the freshly-made side dishes offered here. The free Chinese pickles are pretty spicy, so think twice before grabbing too many.

Tantsuchian Stinky Tofu uses two deep fryers: One fryer contains lower-temperature oil to preheat the tofu, and the other high-temperature fryer makes it crispy and flavorful. Tantsuchian's juicy, beehive-like tofu is marinated with various vegetables that vegetarians can enjoy, too. To eat the tofu here, most patrons stick some pickles into the tofu, and eat it with some shredded cucumber. Spicy Tender Stinky Tofu (NT$55) is another popular dish that diners can re-cook with some noodles, in a combination that is so delicious that it has to be tried.
