When it comes to local dining, hotel restaurants often don't receive the attention or credit they deserve for offering outstanding cuisine. This is a bit ironic, given the fact that independent restaurants commonly tout the fact that their kitchens are manned by "hotel chefs".

One excellent example of this is Hung's Mansion hotel, home to a beautiful, spacious, first-floor dining establishment that has recently wowed customers with appealing--but separate--lunch and dinner offerings. Located on Taiwan Boulevard (Taichung Port Rd.) in the Chaoma area, the hotel is easy to reach and has free basement parking for customers.

Quiet and isolated from the busy world outside the huge glass windows, the restaurant's high ceilings, big space and attractive, home-like decorations give it a colorful, welcoming, relaxing atmosphere. The 50-plus seat establishment also has some outdoor terrace tables and a private room for functions of 12-15 people.

At one of the room is the hotel's lounge bar, generally open during the same hours as the restaurant but accepting drink orders (average NT$250) all day long. Notable features include a wine collection and a big-screen TV.

For quite a while now, lunchtimes here have featured a popular buffett (NT$420/weekdays, NT$500/weekends) offering 30-40 different selections and including a salad bar, unique fresh-seafood bar, and cold and hot dishes. There are also all-you-can-eat Angus beef, cut with each customers' order, and traditional Taiwanese-style noodles.

More recently, dinner times here have featured three different set meals (NT$680, NT$880, NT$1,080) which include appetizers, a side vegetable, soup, meat or seafood main dish, side courses (Seafood, Chicken and Mushroom Rice in Lotus Leaf) and dessert (Formosa Seasonal Fruit).

The Seafood Dinner Set (NT$680) comes with Marinated Salmon & Shrimp Salad with Caesar Sauce, Sauteed King Trumpet Mushrooms with Garlic, Chicken Soup with Scallops and Yam, Assorted Seafood served in a Pumpkin with White Wine Cream Sauce, side course and dessert. The Beef/Lobster Dinner Set includes Abalone, Mullet and Scallops as an Appetizer, Sauteed Pea Sprouts and Mushrooms, "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall" Casserole, Grilled Bone-in Marbled Beef, side course and dessert.

These high-end, but very reasonably-priced, lunch buffet and dinner set-meal choices help ensure that Hung's Mansion's restaurant will continue to grow in popularity as an excellent dining option.
