Pisa PizzaFinding pizza in Taichung has never been easier but, with all the new pizza places popping up, finding that personal favorite can be a challenge. Luckily for me, I discovered the perfect place to sate my appetite for proper Italian cuisine.

Pisa Pizza uses a traditional wood-fired oven to bake thin-crust pizzas and calzones that could only be described as masterpieces. My favorite among the calzone choices (NT$230-360) is the Calzone Mucho Macho (NT$340), loaded with pepperoni, salami, green peppers, olives and onions with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. The vegetarian Calzone di Giardino (NT$290) is also amazing with ample broccoli, mushrooms, olives, green and red peppers, tomato sauce and cheese, all wrapped in warm crust bedecked in parmesan cheese and oregano. Calzones also come with marinara sauce for dipping.

Pizzas are similarly priced, from a NT$190 Cheese Pizza to the NT$320 Cheese Steak and Italian Sausage. I usually order a "half and half" pizza (NT$320) so I can mix and match my flavors--such as a delectable Cheese Steak Pizza, with marinated beef, green peppers and onions, paired with a Stagioni Pizza with salami, onions, mushrooms and olives.

If you're not hungry enough for a whole pizza, Pisa Pizza offers some good alternatives. Its new NT$169 lunch special includes a small pizza, soft drink and salad. On the other hand, if a large pizza isn't already enough, there are several side dishes and appetizers to accompany your meal. I highly recommend the Smoked Chicken Nachos (NT$170) with homemade salsa, or a Caesar Salad (NT$110) with a creamy, flavorful homemade dressing. The Caesar salads with bacon bits or pepperoni (NT$140) are even better.

For those with a sweet tooth, there are a few great dessert choices, too. Only NT$50, the homemade brownies are an ideal end to your meal. For something even more special, definitely try the Banana Bomb Pizza (NT$160 small, NT$210 large). Topped with bananas and caramel, this is a treat for both the taste buds and eyes. Keep a camera handy, because when this pizza comes out, it's on fire!
