One of the first things that many customers notice when they sit
down in the bright, pleasant ambiance of Shantung Dumplings and
Beef Noodles is the excellent jazz and blues music playing through
the stereo system. It turns out that friendly owner Nicholas Hu
is a big fan of the music, which provide a somewhat-unique atmosphere
to enjoy his excellent food. As the small restaurant's name implies,
beef noodles (NT$80) and dumplings (NT$4 each) are the main attractions
here. The thick noodles (niu rou mien) come with thick chunks of
beef and the shrimp-filled dumplings (hsia rou shui jiao) are similarly-tasty.
However, these are just a couple of Hu's delicious dishes, including
a good "soup-less" noodles (gan mien), curry beef or chicken
rice (jia li fan), and Shantung beef rice (nio rou fan). There are
various smaller side dishes to go with your main meal and most menu
items are also available for take-out. Cokes and other cold drinks
are found in the refrigerator at the back of the room. Hu has been
running the popular eatery for about three years and says that the
ideally-located establishment is already a big hit with many foreigners,
not to mention Chinese. Heading in a downtown direction on Kung
Yi Road, the Shantung restaurant is on the left, about two stores
past the Meitsun Road intersection.
