The idea behind this almost-hidden, attractive lounge bar is to create a bar with a relaxing, cafe-like ambiance. With warm subdued lighting, jazz music, comfortable sofas, plenty of space, a walk-in wine cellar (with 144 wines) and a long bar, Wooden Horse succeeds on all counts. One of the most striking features of the lounge/bar/cafe is its outdoor, neon-lit basement courtyard where there is also nice seating, as this place is located on the back side of the China Trust Bank building next to Swensen's, facing the HuaMei Street canal. In addition to the wide drink selection, one can enjoy everything from German sausages and lobster salad to "jaotze" dumplings. Two private rooms--an eight-person (NT$5,000/minimum charge) and 15-person (NT$8,000 minimum)--are available by reservation. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Ann Lee

A. Wooden Horse's long bar serves up a wide variety whiskies (at least 15 years old), champagne, cognac, bourbon, cocktails (NT$250-300) and other spirits, plus eight Belgian beer varieties (NT$250) and other beers (NT$150). The coffee selection is above average, too.

B. Sofas, romantic lighting and jazz music help create a relaxing, soothing environment for relaxation and quiet conversations.

Alcoholic drinks are strictly prohibited for those under 18.
