Taichung can now boast about being first in another national category,
with the opening of the largest metropolitan park in the country,
measuring 88 hectares in size. This impressive NT$5.5 billion Ministry
of Interior project straddles the Taichung city/county line on the
top of Tatu Mountain, with a panoramic view of Taichung city one
side and of the coast on the other. The entire facility has enough
paths for a hours of wandering and includes a visitor center with
cafe and snack bar, an enormous sundial, play and fitness areas,
lakes and streams, outdoor performance areas and parking for about
400 cars. A useful way to get there is to take Hsitun Road straight
up to the top of the hill and turn right on to broad, attractive
Tu Hui Yuan Road. At night, the area provides great views of the
city, although only the circular plaza around the visitor center
is open after 6 p.m. (and closes at 9 p.m.).
