A Nostgalic Tribute To The 20th Century

By Karishma Krishna

Awake from your chrysalis, a new season is here! We are seeing a metamorphosis of the ethereal Bohemian Romantic of last season into a nostalgic tribute to the entire 20th century of fashion design. It remains distinctly feminine--but tough, too. On the runways of the world, we see the opulence of 20s "speakeasies," hints of 30s vamps, and even 80s androgyny.

For a quirky change, try a Scottish-inspired kilted schoolgirl crossed with biker-influenced 90s gothic. These somber moods gel to become hardcore but never overwhelming. Hyped with super sexy details, she is feminine but never angelic!

The season sees the evident exchange of fashion and film. Movies like "Chicago" have caused a resurgence of the whimsical and flirtatious "Roaring Twenties." Flapper styles, Raul Poiret-inspired silhouettes, and plenty of sequins, ornate beading, swinging hemlines, drapey sleeves and skilful tailoring. The fashion lady's dual personality also shows itself in an androgynously charming way. She uses pinstriped, masculine pants, with crisp, fitted, shirts, and long jackets. Scottish tartans, British Barbara Woodhouse-inspired Argyles and Herringbones designed just for her add the needed spice.

Her attire is also fun and youthful with a sixties "Mod Squad" retro-infusion. This combines the cheeky mood of pop art (black and white geometrical shapes) with 60s designers enthusiasm for the space-age. Marc Jacob's pays homage in orange, blue, purple and green with a line of super-short minis, jumpers, bright leggings and A-lined schoolgirl styled dresses. For a more sophisticated approach Armani and Tommy Hilfiger showed a little retro-verve using spacey, streamlined shapes and patterns. This season is bombarded by "Back to the Future" styled zippers, buckles, clasps, and pocketing.

These, dear ladies, are all the ingredients needed for the latest expressions of feminine charm. Look out for next month's issue about how the wear these trends!
