The 2009 Taichung Traditional Arts Festival will take place from February 6 (Friday) to February 15 (Sunday) at Wen-Hsin Forest Park's Fulfillment Amphitheatre. With "The Variety of Taichung" as this year's festival theme, the city's Cultural Affairs Bureau has put together a good selection of traditional cultural performances and a market showcasing traditional artwork for the public to purchase. Towards the goal of expanding Taichung's international horizons, festival organizers are also inviting a team of artists from Xiamen and Singapore to join this year's wonderful performances. As a result, festival participants will be able to enjoy outstanding international-standard shows in addition to traditional performances presented by local artists and groups.

The venue of this cultural event will be Wen-Hsin Forest Park, with the main stage set up at the Fulfillment Amphitheater and a second stage at the park's motorcycle parking lot. For the main stage grand opening show, there will be a classy performance by Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera Company. In addition, Xiamen's Gezai Opera Troupe will also be visiting Taichung to perform with Taiwan's National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), for a once-in-a-lifetime show that shouldn't be missed. The last show at the 2009 Taichung Traditional Arts Festival will be a unique display put on by the Taiwan Chio-Tian Folk Drums & Arts Troupe.

On the festival's side stage will be a variety of equally-good performances by various groups. These include: Singapore's Chinese Opera Institute, Pear Garden Music Ensemble, Zhong Yin-Nan Music Group from Taichung's Leh Cherng Temple, Kuo Kuang Chinese Opera Company, Golden Bough Opera Troupe, Wuchou Puppet Theater Troupe, Long Ea Ger Puppet Show Troupe, Chun Qiu Ger Puppet Show Troupe, Ching Fei-Fong Marionette Theatre Troupe, Yong Xing Yue Shadow Puppet Troupe, and Hong Xing Ger Shadow Puppet Troupe.

Several local elementary schools will also participate in this year's festival. These include Wen-Sang Elementary School's lion dance/diabolo performance group, Kuo-Kuang Elementary School's traditional music ensemble and drum group, Zheng Ping Elementary School's traditional music ensemble and dance troupe, Du-Xing Elementary School's dance troupe, and Xin-Xing Elementary School's Chinese opera troupe. All these guarantee a daily feast of traditional artistic performances, which the Cultural Affairs Bureau guarantees will appeal to a broad spectrum of people who appreciate any form of traditional art.

Some family-oriented activities have also been added to this year's event, including old-time favorites like playing with spinning tops, tying Chinese knots, straw-weaving, making sugar-coated pears and bamboo dragonflies. Children of any age and even adults can enjoy these fun-filled DIY activities. Visitors may also explore the different booths and traditional arts market set up in different corners of the festival venue. These include vendors selling traditional sweets like sugar onions, dough figurines, painted sugar figurines and dragon whisker candy, as well as chances make your own writing brush and numerous Chinese-painting booths.

This year's festival activity series was planned by the same group organizing the Central Taiwan Lantern Festival this year, helping to create a festive atmosphere for the upcoming Lunar Chinese New Year holidays. Those who decide to take part in this traditional arts festivity will experience precious treasures created in various traditional Taiwanese art forms. Families and friends are all welcome to join the Cultural Affairs Bureau in enjoying all the fun programs that have been designed for this year's festival. For more information regarding the festival program, visit the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau website at http://www.tccgc.gov.tw, or call (04) 2372-7311, ext. 366 or 367.
