For those seeking something different, fun and active, this recently-opened gym and studio offers Capoeira, among the fastest-growing martial arts in the world. Capoeira combines fight moves, dance, acrobatics and music with elements of Afro-Brazilian culture, making it a sport that instills discipline, increases flexibility, teaches self-defense and offers a great physical workout. It also provides a chance to learn about Brazilian culture and history and make new friends. English/Chinese classes are run by experienced instructor Magia and the schedule caters to all levels, including beginners and children's classes. Prices start from NT$250 per class with discounts available for block bookings and a free first trial class. --By James Kane, translated by S. Ying

A. Evasive techniques are used as self-defense.

B. Capoeira's beautiful movements give it an aesthetic element.

C. Unlike other martial arts, there is little physical contact or subduing of an opponent, as participants gather in a circle called a 'roda' to dance and playfully fight accompanied by percussive music and singing.
