spirit of cosplay

Cosplay is the art or practice of wearing costumes to portray characters from fiction, especially manga, anime, animation and science fiction. I was recently asked to photograph a "cosplayer" at the annual two-day cosplay convention at Feng Chia University on March 21 and 22. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting much. However, I was pleasantly surprised by both the size and quality of the event. People took their cosplay seriously, often producing handmade costumes with great attention to detail or modifying store-bought costumes to become the embodiment of these characters rather than just wearing their costumes. I enjoyed the creativity on display, but what impressed me most was the community spirit. Participants were not individual cosplayers competing against each other but, on the contrary, were bonded together by a common interest, which felt welcoming.
