This new shop was recently opened by Taiwerica founder/designer Scott Flynn, who launched his T-shirt design company about two years ago. Flynn, an Iowa native who studied Chinese in college, says that his designs are mostly inspired by Taiwanese cultural themes, presented from an American point of view and mixed with some American humor. "I'd like to start a new trend; I want people to either wear shirts that have English that makes sense, or are in Chinese," he says. "I want people to think more about what's on their T-shirts." So far, his approach is working and 80% of his customers are Taiwanese, who seem to enjoy Taiwerica's creations. Foreigners looking for an eye-catching souvenir of their time in Taiwan also like his shirts. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Naomi Lai
A. Scott poses with a T-shirt bearing his trademark logo, which symbolizes the America-meets-Taiwan philosophy behind his creations.
B. The shop offers about 20 T-shirt designs (NT$350-490), including the popular "Taiwan Scooter Bus" design (pictured left). Scott is always adding new T-shirts, like the amusing "Democrazy" and O-Ba-Ma-Ying-Jeou" designs.
C. Taiwerica's little shop is located on the second floor of the Beacon Sun Plaza shopping mall, just meters from Feng Chia University's main gate in the heart of Feng Chia Night Market.
