French-based Decathlon, the world's second-largest sporting-goods retailer, has opened its first Taiwan mega-store next to Costco. This 1,500-ping (4,500 sq. m.) flagship store joins about 600 branches in 16 countries/territories and will be followed by an aggressive Carrefour-like expansion across Taiwan. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Angel Pu

A. Thousands of Decathlon products cover 60 different sports, from camping/hiking gear and watersports to a full line of bicycles and accessories. As part of of its low-price/high-quality philosophy, it designs and manufactures products sold under its 16 in-house brand names.

B. Unique from most retailers, Decathlon stores feature various product-trial areas where staff welcome shoppers to try out products, from bicycles to kids' trampolines, creating a fun, lively shopping environment.
