Joining a first Taichung store in the Fengjia Night Market (431, FuXing Rd.), the YoFroyo frozen yogurt ("froyo") chain has added this branch in Chung Yo Department Store. Ordering one of these low-calorie, low-fat treats means selecting from either a dozen "Seasonal Creation" combinations with names like Tropical Breeze and Mango Madness, or one of six regular "Froyo Creations" like Tokyo Reverie and Chocolate Devotion. Or create your own combo--choose either small (NT$80), medium (NT$95) or large (NT$120) cup size, pick your "froyo" flavor, and choose two toppings. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Angel Pu
A. YoFroyo founders Austin Chia and Allen Loh both have family ties to Taiwan, met as fellow Bio-Engineering majors at UC San Diego and became roommates. Deciding Taiwan was ready for America's frozen yogurt craze, they opened their first Taipei store in May, 2009 and now have seven stores, with plans for 30-35 more.
B. Of the six or so frozen yogurt flavors available, the sour, slightly-sweet Original--pictured here with kiwi and banana fruit toppings--is most popular in Taipei, followed by Chocolate. Toppings include chewy little flavored mochi balls (blueberry, green tea, etc.) that are quite addicting.
C. YoFroyo's newest product is hot flavored milk drinks--foamy, latte-like beverages in flavors like Barley, Brulee, and Matcha. Six smoothie drinks are also available.
