The hugely-popular 'Gong Yuan Yen Ke' Dawn Cake retro-style ice creamerie/bakery/restaurant is joined by this equally-cool sister branch, 2-3 blocks up ZhongShan Road, just past JiGuang Street. As its name reveals, an old bank building, built in 1966, has been transformed into a two-floor retro-chic establishment, decorated with vintage photos, wooden furniture, chandeliers and vintage bank-vault doors. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Angel Pu
A. The second floor has indoor and outdoor-balcony seating, plus a counter selling treats like Syrup Waffles (NT$80) and cookies, traditional Taiwanese snacks like tea eggs (NT$15) and duck wings, and a big variety of tea drinks and coffees. Don't miss the interesting restrooms!
B. An all-new shaved-ice counter serves this Mango Shaved Ice (NT$450), a giant block of frozen mango pulp, filled and surrounded by mango chunks, Sri Lankan Black Tea and Irwin Mango ice cream, and dragon-fruit syrup.
C. The first-floor ice cream counter boasts 72 flavors, including many new varieties like Caribbean 66% Nutty Yogurt, or Caramel Latte Yirgachefee (NT$90/scoop).
