Coffee Smith

(04) 2326-2005
408, HuaMei St, West Dist
Hours: 9 am-9 pm

Located in the Canal District, this cozy, comfortable cafe is the first Taichung branch of a chain--which has expanded to Malaysia and Xiamen, China--started in Taipei by a group of friends committed to handmade, high-quality, but reasonably-priced, coffees and food. Latte-art contest winning barista Jericho Chen prepares a variety of beautiful lattes (NT$130) and other coffees, made from imported Italian award-winner DaVinci Pinarello beans. Other drinks include teas, fresh and fruity juice combinations, and six craft beers (NT$180) from Taiwan Head Brewers. Available all day, excellent dining choices include some creative, tasty treats, like the Smoked Salmon with Capers Griddle Cake (NT$170), whose slices are best when rolled up for savory mouthfuls, and the uniquely-savory Garlic Sauce and Seasoning French Fries (NT$120). Among six all-day brunches (NT$210-280) is the Moroccan-inspired Seasonal Vegetables with Stewed Pork Slices in Tomato Sauce. Two risottos, made with Italian Arborio rice, include Columbus Tomato Seafood Risotto (NT$320). --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Anna Yang
