Lele Books House

(04) 2358-2083
6, YuCheng Rd, Xitun Dist
Hours: 10 am-6 pm (closed Tue)

This used-book shop charges NT$100 to enter and read through the roughly 4,000 books stocked in various categories. The modern-looking interior, created by owner/designer Chan Ching-ping, offers chaise lounge chairs, wooden tables and chairs, and a wall of shelves. Customers can also enjoy all-you-can-drink free coffee and other drinks while reading. Another unique interior design feature is a two-story-tall banyan tree situated in the middle of the store; when the ceiling window is open, its branches and leaves gently move in the breeze. New books are occasionally stocked here, although these aren't for sale and are for exchange with customers' books only. The 10th and 25th of each month are book donation days when all are welcome to donate or exchange books (trade two good-condition books to get one book) at this shop. Chan also hopes to donate 10,000 books to schools in remote areas in a humanitarian gesture. The second floor here is available for special events like book club meetings, seminars, arts exhibitions and speeches--call and ask for details. --By Uvia Chang, translated by Anna Yang
