The intriguing name "Ba Nian De," which basically means "for eight years" comes from the owner, who ran a restaurant in China for eight years. The restaurant specializes in spicy shrimp and crab dishes, which are common in Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as sharing some traits with Sichuan's famous Spicy Hot Pot. The crab and shrimp is tangy and go great with beer in the summer. The chefs at Ba Nian De stress that they have a secret recipe that won't make you feel that eating spicy food in the summer heat is a drag—they marinate the seafood in Chinese medicinal ingredients for 15 hours. The owner has rated Ba Nian's spice level into four grades, but do take the owner's advice—the spicier the food, the better the flavor. --By Josie Wu, translated by Ann Lee

A. The Spicy Shrimp and Spicy Crab Pots come with bread to mop up their dipping sauce and chili oil. When your mouth is on fire, have a few bottles of Zhujiang beer (NT$95/bottle) for a really authentic experience.

B. Order some shrimp before you try the crab pot; then you can add soup stock to the pot and enjoy the shrimp either dry or with the soup.
