Thanks to popular demand, Mindong Korean Gourmet has finally, after a decade in business, opened a second location. Just because celebrities and showbiz figures are regulars at this restaurant doesn't mean that it is expensive. On the contrary, it serves quality Korean food at very affordable prices. In a change from the original location, this new Mindong is positioned as an "izakaya", or a drinking bar, with a capacity of about 80 people. What remains unchanged is the famous delicious Korean cuisine. First off, Mindong proudly offers the "Troops Hotpot" (NT$600), a unique dish invented during the Cold War when the U.S. troops were stationed in Korea and there was a constant food shortage. Then, no one could have foreseen the long-term popularity of this hotpot, created by Koreans who cooked U.S. Army Spam with watercress, cheese, kimchi, rice cakes and glass noodles in a beef broth. If you like it spicy, you can always ask for extra chili peppers in the broth. When the hotpot is nearly empty, be sure to throw in Korean ramen and eat it while it's hot! Undoubtedly, Mindong's Troop's Hotpot is set to be a big hit this winter. After-dinner visitors to Mindong can also enjoy Korean Chicken Gizzard (NT$200) and Beef Tendons (NT$480), which complements any alcoholic beverage you choose. --Written & translated by Diva Yang
