This place serves an exclusive Malaysian-style coffee, hand-brewed at temperatures under 95 degrees C, and uses a unique, low-heat roasting technique. Malaysian-born owner Michael has been so successful in promoting his coffee empire that he has opened three branches in less than six months. The coffee house name is taken from a well-known white coffee brand in Ipoh, Malaysia--CJ (or Chang Jiang). --By Josie Wu, translated by Ann Lee
A. The shop starts serving breakfast (NT$120) at 9 a.m. (delivery service available 9-11:30 a.m.) and options have a classic southern Asian flavor. There are various kinds of bread rolls (pick 1 out of 4), soft-boiled eggs, white coffee and toast, served with a creamy coconut paste called "kaya" and peanut butter. Pour some sweetened condensed milk onto the toast and fold it in half for an especially savory treat. If you want to enjoy a Malaysian-style soft-boiled eggs, crack open the half-cooked egg onto a small plate, add a dash of soya sauce and black pepper, mix it all together and swallow it all down.
B. Besides the specialty white coffees and roasted breads, southern Asian style dishes also play a big part in winning regular patronage at CJ. Store manager Kobayashi Shinya recommends their Curry Chicken Baggutte (NT$150), made solely with chicken leg meat, together with spices and various toppings. By the time the dish is served, the chicken has soaked up all the flavors and is perfect for enjoyment with some bread and the slightly spicy dressing that comes with the dish.
C. From food to decor, CJ White Coffee exudes a simple southern-Asian vibe.
