In recent years, new developments have revitalized Taiwan's film industry and helped it to evolve, boosting local confidence in home-grown films. Many talented local filmmakers owe their success to the Golden Harvest Awards, known as a cradle for successful Taiwanese directors. World-renowned Ming Liang Tsai, Ang Lee and Chin Yen Yee, and new-generation filmmakers Tom ShuYu Lin, Zero Chou and TeSheng Wei all received their very first recognition here. For the awards' 31st year, the jury has taken four months to review 177 entries and decide on 35 nominations. A total of NT$3 million in cash prizes will be awarded on May 15 at Taipei's Chungshan Hall.
Interested film fanatics may click on the awards' official blog to preview trailers and highlights of nominated films. Unlike recent years, a lot of the 2009 nominations feature well-known actors and actresses. Sandrine Pinna, nominated for best leading actress in "Miao Miao" last November was cast in "Intoxicant" and "Nirvana"; Suming Jiang, who won the Best New Talent award at Golden Horse last year, appeared in "Hopscotch"; thanks to "Winds of September", Edison Wang became an instant sensation and now is scheduled to join the all-star cast of Hong Kong film "Dark October" and can be seen in "My Grandma". Last but not least, actress LunMei Gui, who hasn't appeared in any Taiwanese film since "Parking", teamed up with veteran actress YiChing Lu and actor TienChu Lee for shared scenes in "Family Viewing".
Director TeSheng Wei, who stormed the box office with his debut "Cape No. 7" last year and kicked off a craze for Taiwanese films, is no stranger to Golden Harvest, where he received recognition three times for previous projects. Therefore, the organizer has put together a special tribute showcasing his earlier works, with four short films--"Face in the Evening", "Three Dialogues", "Before Dawn" "Seediq Bale"--and one feature-length film, "About July". This makes this year's festival the best chance to watch all Wei's works at once. While the economy sinks to a new low, the Golden Harvest Film Festival continues to grow, as the only event that allows you to enjoy films and discover Taiwanese filmmaking talent free of charge in an air-conditioned theater!
