As grownups, we are seldom reunited with our juvenile love of whimsy, but if you pay a visit to Merry Melody, that wall separating youth from age and fact from fiction is sure to tumble down--just like Humpty Dumpty. This store's imported collection of handmade puppets range from miners and grocery store clerks to royalty and computer programmers! No matter what you're looking for (or if you're just looking), all of the puppets here are vibrant and interesting. --By Joan Chang, translated by Ann Lee, photos by Andy Lin

A. Imported from Germany, these puppets double as incense burners. They are delicately crafted by KWO from Amourette wood (front NT$3,250, middle NT$5,900, back NT$3,300). The older puppets have longer, skinny faces; the more modern puppets are rounder. Each comes equipped with an incense holder, which makes the puppet appear to be smoking or breathing in cold weather.

B. Would you like to own a custom-made music box? First, you get to select your base (NT$350-850); a medium base is about the size of a business card. Next, you can choose from 16 songs that will play when your music box is open. Finally, you choose an accessory for your box, like a teddy bear, a small house, or a little puppet (NT$20-500).
