upcoming WHAT'S COOKING

Dionysus' Epicurean Corner

The last month of the year is usually one of my favorites. I get to look forward to Christmas parties and enjoy countdown celebrations with my friends on New Year's Eve. Everywhere you go, street corners are filled with a festive atmosphere and, most importantly, you get to enjoy the company of family and loved ones, making everything seem cozy and wonderful, like icing on a cake. As Christmas is just around the corner, what plans do you have in mind for the holiday season?

Grand Hyatt Taipei is offering a great range of Christmas-themed meals at selected restaurants like Ziga Zaga (Italian), Bel Air, and Cheers, a perfect venue for a relaxed evening accompanied by quality drinks, a wide selection of food and contemporary tunes by a live trio. What's more, gift shops located within the hotel also have various exquiste and very tempting Christmas items on display for purchase. The Cosmopolitan Restaurant is also bringing some Christmas set meals (NT$990) to the table--guests get to choose one of two main courses. There's the Pan Fried Pork Chop with Madeira Sauce, made with U.S. imported pork chops mixed with a dressing made from lemon juice, sea salt and black pepper. The second option is the Milan Type Ossobuco with Saffron Rice, braised with fresh fruits and vegetables, a favorite Italian recipe for this festive season.

French restaurant Louis XIV is presenting its Christmas feast from December 23 to 25 for NT$2,008. If you come in a group of four or more and make reservations ahead of time, the staff will bring a special gift to your table--a complimentary bottle of Gancia Brut (750ml) Italian sparkling wine.

If you prefer to spend Christmas Eve at home, why not surf the Internet for some online shopping? Bakoln is registered online company that offers European-style foods (go to www.bakoln.com.tw or www.德國豬腳.tw). Apart from the highly-popular German-style Pig Knuckle dish, there are also Christmas meals that include dishes like Roast Chicken, German Sausages and Au Gratin Baked Vegetables (NT$1,500), or Christmas Turkey (5.5 lbs for NT$2,800). Bakoln provides free home delivery service for every household within Taipei city and Taipei county. And, if you are holding a party for 30 people or more, they will send staff to your home for some food tasting--a real treat!

Starbucks Coffee is promoting a Christmas theme, "To you from us", this month, selling more than 60 Christmas-themed items including gifts, cakes and coffees. Their gourmet coffee gift box comes with a combination of popular coffee beans (NT$660). Some are paired up with decaf beans--the Day & Night Christmas Gift Box (NT$750)--or you can opt for the Coffee Connoiseur's Choice Box (NT$1,300), which offers four of Starbuck's best-selling coffees in a box, ideal for enjoyment on your own or as a present for friends and family.
