A new coffeeshop/restaurant was opened recently in a building in the garden of a 120-year-old mansion. The dilapidated old mansion was the former family home of a very wealthy family surnamed Liu. Their original home was the traditional Chinese dwelling next door that dates back more than 200 years. This site is open to the public, who can view the family shrine built there in 1867 using materials imported from the Chinese mainland. A Japanese-style room in the coffee house is aesthetically impressive, embrace the old, cozy atmosphere that the building exudes. There are also tables outside in the garden. Coffees from many parts of the world are served with cake. Prices reflect the quality, ranging from NT$120 for old favourites like Mocha up to NT$350 for an exceptional variety of Blue Mountain. Home blends are also available and start at NT$90. A full dinner menu is available. Here is conveniently situated near the main road to Tainan and will appeal to those wishing to enjoy a relaxing afternoon sipping quality coffee, eating good food, and viewing some historic architecture. --By Dave Thiselton
