Hud La Voos is an aboriginal-themed
pub-restaurant in its third incarnation. After running pubs
in Tainan City, the Sun sisters opened an aboriginal restaurant
in their native village in the highlands of Kaohsiung County.
However, due to heavy typhoons this year, there have been
few tourists in the mountains, so they decided to open another
pub in Tainan. This time they've renovated a 67-year-old house
in a small alley not far from the train station. A bold color
scheme frames Ebu's strong and distinctively aboriginal art,
while the sisters' carvings complement the paintings. Most
of the materials were gathered in the mountains or from beaches,
and after two-and-a-half-months of intensive work, the pub
opened for business on October 16. Food ranges in price from
NT$100 to NT$400, and includes Chinese dishes as well as exotic
aboriginal dishes such as baby hornet, mountain boar, rat,
and wild organic plants and ferns. Among the beers are Tiger
(on tap), and bottled Belgian beers. --By Richard Matheson,
