The
floor space of Ami's Beauty Studio, located in
the lane next to the campus of the University of
ChengDa, is not even two pings in area. The interior
is relatively straightforward and simple, a testament
to the owner's unique style. As the space is limited
in the establishment, Ami can only cut hair, and
not offer other services to her customers, who
are mostly students from DaCheng or students from
neighboring senior high schools. Ami tries to find
the most natural and most suitable hair design
for each of her clients-no easy task as every customer's
needs are unique and not necessarily in line with
contemporary fashion. As every one's needs are
particular-especially true with today's youth--
Ami spends a lot of time listening to the customer
to understand exactly what they want. Once done,
she tries to match the style and give her customers
hairstyles that they can easily maintain at home.
The biggest accomplishment, Ami feels, is the satisfied
look on each of her customer's faces as they leave
her shop. Ami's history is marked by dreams and
determination. Ami left her previous job as an
accountant a few years back determined to study
at a Japanese-style beauty salon. Times were initially
tough, but she pressed on, driven by her interest
to be a beautician, an interest she developed when
she was young. She eventually became a beautician,
and, after a few years of hard work, she established
her own shop. Her family, however, did not initially
support her decision, but she continued on, turned
her family around, and fulfilled her dreams in
this tiny shop.--By Magen Lin, translated by John
