Kenting's Wuliting Airport

By Aphrodite Hua

The recent opening of Wuliting Airport, in Pingtung County's Hengchun Township, makes Kenting National Park much more accessible to residents of North and Central Taiwan. The airport project--a priority because of the government's goal of doubling the number of foreign tourist arrivals--was delayed because of the closure of two contractors working on the project. Wuliting Airport (code HCN), which used to be a military base, is now linked to Taipei by daily flights with Mandarin Airlines, UNI Airways, and TransAsia Airways; Mandarin and UNI will also operate daily services to Taichung. Shuttle buses connect the airport with Kenting's main resort area. Pingtung County Government has set up a tourist service center (which can help with travel information, hotel reservations etc.) and an agricultural produce exhibition center inside the airport. Meanwhile, those who prefer driving to flying can use the Second Southern Freeway, which was recently completed, and now runs from Central Taiwan to within one hour of Hengchun.
