Neighborhood markets cannot guarantee the best produce. According to Real Life, locally grown fruits and vegetables are often more harmful than healthy because of toxic chemicals. Real Life, the first in Asia admitted to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), carries all natural foods that are environmentally friendly. The product line is extensive: "clean & green" produce, cheeses, vitamins, cooking ingredients and more. "Silky" tofu (NT$40/5grams), made fresh by a master trained in Japan, relies on imported soybeans from Minnesota - not the GMO (genetically manufactured) variety. "Green Shopping Days", the last weekend of the month, offer significant discounts. A visit to Real Life's newest location in Hanshin Department Store or the main shop (37, Lin Teh Street; tel: 07/726-8608) is an education. The staff enthusiastically shares expertise. If you have concerns, they're able to trace items back to original source point (from shipping container to actual field plots). Beverage service and take-out are also available. By Karen Schmitt
