Taichung's first five-star resort provides an exquisite, convenient escape only 20 minute's drive from downtown. Perched on Dadu Mountain south of the Wang Gao Liao Lookout Point, this 155-room hot springs resort provides panoramic views of the entire city, enjoyed from the enormous ceiling-to-floor lobby windows, or personal hot springs tubs in most rooms. Freshfields' two connected five and 10-floor wings are built into a hillside and surrounded by attractive landscaping and smaller buildings containing spa facilities. Amenities include men's/women's sauna, gym, outdoor hot springs area and "kids' club" activities. The 100-seat Seasons Western semi-buffet, open-kitchen restaurant and 150-seat Asian Fusion Chinese-Japanese restaurant both face onto a grass lawn with outdoor seating and a view. Banquet facilities also hold up to 500. Big, attractive rooms start from the Superior King (NT$3,800)--the only type not equipped with hot springs tubs--and continue with the Freshfields King (NT$6,800), Double (NT$7,300) and a variety of suites up to the NT$50,000 Presidential Suite. Opening discounts as low as NT$3,299 for two are now available, as are cheaper two-hour daytime room packages. Future plans include a wedding chapel, outdoor swimming pool and individual villas. Conference/convention packages are also offered in cooperation with the large, adjacent Nan Shan training center. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Ann Li
