Red Dot Hotel
206, MinZu Rd, Central Dist.
This 55-room designer hotel--brainchild of its Taipei-based interior designer GM--is making waves and attracting artistic types and other guests with its striking, often-whimsical creativity. Facilities include business and fitness centers and an art space where regular exhibitions are held. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Sho Huang
A. The star attraction in the red-brick walled lobby is a 27-meter stainless-steel tube slide, a NT$5 million work of industrial art that all guests are welcome to ride down from the second floor (3-6 p.m. or 11 a.m.-12 noon check-outs). Every piece of lobby seating, including an old barber's chair, is also uniquely creative.
B. Seven hotel room sizes, classified by clothing sizes, include the standard "L" Room (NT$2,980 weekdays, NT$3,880 Fri/Sat.) with either a king-sized bed or two smaller beds. All homey-feeling rooms have plenty of plugs and outlets, an espresso machine, cute suitcase-shaped bathroom amenities kit and other nice touches.
C. A creatively-decorated B1-level restaurant offers guest breakfasts with a main-course choice (like Truffle Scrambled Eggs) plus a buffet.
