1969 Blue Sky Hotel

(04) 2223-0577
38, ShiFu Rd, Central Dist
www.1969blueskyhotel.com

Located a block from old Taichung City Hall and already gaining popularity with foreign individual travelers, this striking, 61-room boutique hotel is housed in a completely renovated/redesigned eight-floor building once home to the well-known Lan Tien Hotel, which opened in 1969 and was popular with famous entertainers and politicians. Making use of some structural highlights from the old building, 1969 Blue Sky Hotel features beautiful Art Deco design elements reminiscent of the 1930s and '40s, from the big decorative front door and imported European stained glass to the furniture, carpeting and room-number lettering. A lobby wall features 198 vintage suitcases stacked two floors high, and the front desk is made from the old hotel's former, giant coal-burning water heater. Six styles of attractive rooms--from the Blue Sky Standard to Starry Room--are well-equipped with creative amenity kits, Japanese electronic toilets and even espresso machines, with few top-end rooms including a vintage-style, stand-alone bathtubs. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Anna Yang
