ABOUT TOWN:

Staying Cool at Taichung's Pools

by Douglas Habecker

When its blazing hot outside, it doesn't take much to convince one that swimming is not only one of the best forms of exercise on the planet, but also provides the additional bonus of being cooling and relaxing.

Fortunately, Taichung residents have quite a few options to choose from when it comes to public or almost-public swimming pools.  While there are plenty of pools, not all are equal, with some--often the government-run variety--being less clean and well-managed than private ones.  Many residents have their favorites, depending on the crowd, atmosphere and facilities they are seeking, and quality can go up or down according to season and usage.  However, the sampling of pools below includes some of the better-known ones, generally with good reputations.

For a newcomer to the city's pools, the best advice might be to spend some time trying different facilities, before choosing one and buying a longer-term swimming pass.  At the very least, you'll stay cool while you're checking these options out (click on one to find out about location, hours, prices and description):
