Legendary Jazz on offer at
2014 Taichung Jazz Festival
By Douglas Habecker
Translated by Alicia Yu |
| The undisputed king of all Taichung public events and highlight of the year, the Taichung Jazz Festival has gone from strength to strength during each of its previous years, always managing to one-up earlier festivals and surprise participants with a seemingly-endless supply of world-class musicians and performances from every corner of the globe. Taking place over nine days from October 18 to 26, this 12th festival promises more of the same, revolving around its "Legend, Jazz" theme.
Besides awesome music, one of the best things about this annual event is that its tried-and-true formula and venue remains largely unchanged. The main stage will dominate the grassy field at Civic Square (a.k.a. People's Park), which completely fills up with thousands of visitors, sprawled out on every available space. More recent years have seen audience members with an increasingly creative variety of set-ups, from candle-lit tables, complete with bottles of wine, to even the occasional small tent.
As always, the main stage will not be the only center of attention, with jazz fans hoping to get closer to the music able to do so at a smaller J-Stage situated nearby on the Calligraphy Greenway. And, of course, the Jazz Festival would not be complete without its other big attraction--dozens of vendor tents, lining Civic Square and the Greenway to sell a cornucopia of food and drinks, usually for exceptionally good prices. This makes the festival a default dinner option for many residents and visitors during the week.
The festival traditionally hosts a variety of headliner foreign acts--generally performing Saturday/Sunday evenings on the main stage--combined with a mix of smaller Taiwanese and foreign artists, mostly from around the island. It's important to note that the Taichung Jazz Festival has done an extremely good job at offering a very broad, often eclectic, variety of jazz that covers the full spectrum, to the edges of the genre to cross over into blues, rock, ethnic music and even hip hop. That means that you are almost guaranteed to find something to your musical liking, whatever your tastes and whether you consider yourself a jazz fan or not.
Just a few highlights from this year's musical feast are noted here, with a full range of Chinese/English information on artists found at the official www.taichungjazzfestival.com.tw website.

John Escreet & Sirius Quartet (10/18, 7-8 p.m. Main Stage)
Despite his youth, this English-born, Brooklyn-based jazz pianist has already won plenty of acclaim as a creative, exciting and prolific artist with huge potential, having already released six critically-acclaimed albums since a 2008 debut release "Consequences". Part of his contemporary appeal is his ability to embrace and incorporate a vast range of jazz and other musical styles, from classical and electronica to bop, leading critics to label him a "musical omnivore". |

ABIAH Quartet Feat. Marcus Strickland (10/18, 8-9:30 p.m. Main Stage)
Formerly known as Jeremiah Abiah, this jazz vocalist garnered widespread attention and praise with his second release "Life As A Ballad", which debuting at No. 20 on the American Billboard Music Charts and No. 2 on the Japanese music charts, not to mention lots of air time for his music videos to millions of viewers on VH1, MTV and other channels. The Rochester, New York native, who started out as a background singer for the likes of George Michael and Chuck Mangione, has a voice now compared by critics to Nina Simone. |

Sirius Quartet (10/19, 3-4 p.m. Main Stage)
Another group of innovators hailing from NYC, this string quartet is made up of conservatory-trained musicians who have become outstanding masters of improvisation. Their appeal comes from an ability to cross musical boundaries and the energy of their performances. This includes a repertoire of electronic music for strings and other rock, jazz and pop influences. This promises anything but a traditional jazz performance. |
