This month's "Hole in the Wall" establishment should actually rate as a full-on restaurant.  However, since the prices here are so reasonable and there isn't much seating available, I feel it deserves to be called a great "Hole".  Shu Bao (which literally translated means "book, newspaper") was originally a Thai restaurant a few years ago and has recently been changed to a teahouse with a very diverse menu.  Its food items include Cantonese-style dim sum, Italian pasta and Southeast Asian cuisine.

Some of the dim sum items include Spicy Tofu (NT$45), Turnip Cake (Luo Po Kau) for NT$45, and Lemon Roasted Squid (NT$100).  For pasta, some examples are Seafood and Vegetable Lasagna (NT$150), Pasta Aglio Olio (Tomato Sauce) for NT$110, and the NT$130 Ham & Mushroom.  Pasta dishes all include soup and tea or coffee for an additional NT$10.

For Southeast Asian dishes, there is Beef Satay (NT$100), Chicken Curry (NT$100), Thai Style Beef (NT$120) and Coconut Chicken (NT$150).  There is also a special menu page which includes items like pizza (NT$150) and a baked chicken curry for NT$200 which includes soup, stuffed potatoes (yes, real stuffed potatoes baked with bacon and cheese), salad, garlic bread and coffee.

What you'll find great about this place is not only is the reasonably-priced food but also the great flavors and good-sized portions.  There is also an extensive tea and coffee menu with most of the tea prices ranging from NT$40 for a small glass to as high as NT$65 for a very large glass.  Regular coffee and espresso are both NT$40 and ice coffee is NT$80.  There are also juice combination drinks and too many special tea concoctions to list here.

Shu Bao is located at 464, Chung Mei Road, behind the original Sogo Department Store (the big white one) and downstairs from P.J.'s Café.  The owner will be adding a downstairs area with more seating so we may be soon upgrading Shu Bao's status to a restaurant.
