There aren't many restaurants
specializing in vegetarian snacks in Taichung. However, Gung De
Lin is famous throughout Taipei, Taoyuan and Taichung for this.
Mrs. Huang is the owner of these franchised restaurants. In her
heavy Shanghai accent, she reminiscences about the time that Buddhist
scriptures touched her so deeply that she became a vegetarian. Each
dumpling is unique work of art. Neither too sweet nor too greasy,
the NT$80 jujube paste dumplings emit a sweet aroma and fill the
mouth nicely. The irresistible vegetarian steamed dumplings (NT$80)
are filled with a delicious, juicy stuffing that trickles out after
a bite. The restaurant itself is plainly decorated but clean, air
conditioning and spacious. New snacks are introduced every day and
include dried papaya, kelp, and tofu strips for NT$30 a plate. Besides
the snacks, there is soup, fried noodles, fried rice, tea, and European
herbal tea for NT$100/pot. To savor the taste, you can try the fruit
or flower drinks after your meal. - By Uvia Chang, translated by
