There
are times when having your dish of pasta smothered in a garden-load
of various herbs can really be overpowering. That is when
you perhaps are in need of a Western restaurant better fitted
for local palates. Such a place is No. 809 Family Pasta, a
small family-run Italian eatery on Dong Xing Road.
No. 809's owner/chef and interior designer, Ms. Jiang, is
a young woman who founded the bistro with her own hands. Everything--from
the paint job to the furnishing of the red-and-white-themed
interior--was created by her. The restaurant is small and
cozy, giving off an intimate and personal ambiance. Every
dish you taste here was also conjured up by Ms. Jiang, who
hopes that her establishment will leave a personal, stress-free
impression on her customers.
Because most Asian palates are not used to strong, flavorful
herbs used generously in pasta dishes, the dishes you will
find here are milder when it comes to herbs. Furthermore,
the prices were so reasonable that I was unsure as to whether
or not I was reading the menu right. The pasta dishes here
range from a scant NT$80 to NT$100. This perhaps reflects
the relatively smaller dish portions that are served here
by comparison to other Italian restaurants. I personally found
the smaller portion to be a nice change from the usual experience
of stuffing myself to a point of sickness. Those with bigger
appetites are able to get an added 20 grams of pasta noodles
for free.
Each dish comes with a thirst-quenching cup of green tea,
and you are able to choose whether or not you wish your pasta
to be spicy--a special option not found everywhere. Pastas
here include Surf Clams with White Wine (NT$90), Chicken with
Cream Basil Sauce (NT$90), Bacon and Mushroom Cream Sauce
(NT$90) and Garlic Cream Seafood (NT$100). Lunch set menus
with Rosemary Chicken, Pork Curry and Beef Meat Sauce choices
(ranging from NT$70NT to NT$80) are also available. One more
unique feature of No. 809 is its soup spaghettis--Prawn Soup
Spaghetti, Cream Seafood Soup, Curry Seafood Soup and Tomato
Fish Soup--all which are a mere NT$90.
Clearly, as No. 809 Family Pasta is showing Taichung diners,
good food and atmosphere doesn't necessarily mean high prices.
