The popular
BBR French bakery and restaurant has re-opened under new management,
and is now part of the Le Chateau des Gateaux group, which
already operates two gourmet shops in Taipei. In its latest
reincarnation, the shop continues to sell a good selection
of breads, cakes, other pastries and sandwiches, but has gone
even more upscale. A greatly-increased selection of imported
gourmet products covers a huge range, including German duck
liver pate, SueBee brand clover honey, raspberry vinegar,
sauerkraut, fruit teas, Camembert cheeses, salad dressings,
yogurts, Guatemalan coffee, Belgian fruit beers, smoked Norwegian
salmon, cereals, champagne and various wines. Notably, BBR
is now Taichung's first outlet for Swiss Movenpick ice cream
(NT$80/scoop, NT$150/twin scoop) with 10 flavors, from Pistachio
to Espresso. There are 35 types of European-style breads,
cookies, quiche pies (NT$70/slice), 30 to 40 cakes and desserts
(NT$75-80/slice), and various sandwich-and-soup meals, like
the Beef Parisien Sandwich with daily soup and coffee or tea
(NT$180). --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Uvia Chang
