Taichung is full of good beef noodle restaurants, but there are
only one or two which offer traditional, hand-cut northern Chinese-style
noodles. Beifang Restaurant is one of these, providing delicious
bowls of these delicious, thick, irregular-looking noodles, which
are made by cutting dough with a knife. A good-sized bowl of beef
noodles (nio rou mien) is NT$90 and other selections include a similarly-good
NT$70 meat-and-vegetables noodle mix (ta lu mien) and soup-less
noodles (dza chiang mien) for NT$60. Other popular non-noodles offerings
are the pancake-like NT$50 scallion/oil flat cakes (tsung you bing),
palm-sized beef cakes (nio rou hsien bing) and the boiled dumplings
(shwei jiao) and steamed dumplings (tzeng jiao), which cost NT$50
per steamer. There are plenty of small side dishes for NT$20 each
and hot Chinese-style corn soup for NT$30. So good are the noodles
and other dishes that this restaurant is frequently full. If the
first floor looks packed out, don't worry. Going through the closed
bathroom door at the back leads to a stairwell and plenty of more
seating upstairs. Beifang Restaurant
has two branches but most diners will probably be closer to the
Meiteh Street branch, located directly opposite the Chungcheng Park,
near Chungshan Hall and China Medical College and Hospital. Taking
Hsueh Shih Road downtown from Chien Hsing Road, turn left on Meiteh
Street as soon as you reach the park, also on the left. The restaurant
is about 80 meters down opposite the park.
