Interested in movies? Which type do you
prefer? Do you long for the chance to know more
about legends like Krzysz tof Kiesloeski, Akira
Kurozawa, Alfred Hitchcock? If you are a fan of
art movies, or you are now looking for resources
about art movies, you can't miss out on 8 1/2 Classic
Theater!
The proprietor Mr. Wang has loved movies since he
was in university. He opened 8 1/2 Classic Theater
10 years ago and now heads an association composed
of 1400 members, ranging in age from 18 to 60.

8 1/2 Classic Theater is much more than a normal
theater. The facade of the first floor looks like
a coffee house; the indoor atmosphere is warm and
cozy. One the walls are a wide array of movie posters
that recall the past.
The screening room features a huge screen and a comfortable
setting enhanced by their high quality projector and
equipment. The archive room is on the second floor
and features plenty of books and periodicals about
movies, art, philosophy, music, and psychology. Mr.
Wang likes to point out that the age and social class
of the members varies widely, with even some professors
and teachers amongst them.

During the interview I asked Mr. Wang why he named
his theater 8 1/2 Classic Theater. He told me that
the attraction of a movie doesn't only lie in the
union of image and sound. The content of a good movie
combines art, music, history, text, architecture and
so forth. Many people researching topics such as art
and history can find inspiration in movies. In other
words, we can watch and admire artistic movies for
many different aspects. Movies without good box office
sales are not always bad movies.

There are study groups and symposiums held
here frequently. In May and June, a series of symposiums
will take place from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM every Thursday night.
