Coming on the heels of the recent Chillies 4 opening (see Nov. Compass), Chillies 5 raises the bar much higher with what is arguably Taiwan’s largest and most attractive Indian dining establishment. Located where SongZhu Road ends at the river near Dakeng Scenic Area, this striking triangular building seats 130 inside—exquisitely decorated with deep colors, custom-made furniture and classy Indian art—and 60 outside at umbrella-covered tables on a pleasant deck, complete with a toy-filled kids’ sandbox. The menu is similar to Chillies 4, with a slightly bigger emphasis on vegetarian dishes and some all-new offerings. These include newly-invented NT$290 Butter Chicken and Butter Paneer pizzas; Veg Frankie (NT$290), a naan bread wrapped stuffed with fresh, salad-style veggies and masala sauce; Mix Veg Tikka (NT$350); and Deep Fried Shrimp. There are also 10 vegetable curries, two NT$1,030 two-person sets, and a NT$299 chicken or vegetarian kid’s set. In the next couple months, an all-day coffee bar will also be added.
