Gulu’s House French Cuisine

For Arthur Weisse, the road between his native Paris and ownership of Gulu’s House French Cuisine was an indirect one. About six years ago while traveling in Thailand as part of an Asian tour, he met his future Taiwanese wife, leading him to Taichung. After some time here, it was natural that the chef–whose kitchen experience began at 16–seek out a local French restaurant to work at. That took him to Gulu’s House, opened by fellow Frenchman Gregory Le Cloarec back in 2007. When Greg decided to return to France about a year ago, Arthur was the perfect person to turn the 32-seat restaurant over to.
Under his guidance, Gulu’s House has maintained its popular reputation as a cozy, very French-feeling bistro offering quality cuisine for reasonable prices. “My mission is to introduce authentic, traditional French cuisine and give everyone the opportunity to try it. It’s not expensive or fancy,” says Arthur, noting that regular customers stop in every week.
Although there’s an a la carte menu, you can enjoy everything on it for much better value via two seasonally-changing sets (NT$490, NT$780). The recently-introduced summer menu includes representative southwestern French dish Duck Leg Confit, featuring duck and potatoes cooked in duck fat for 5-6 and two hours, respectively, and served with a red wine sauce. This dish and Duck Breast from Yilan are made with duck sourced from that northeastern Taiwan county in the mix of local and select imported French ingredients Arthur prefers. Other main courses range from Herb Crusted Provencal Rack of Lamb “New Zealand” to Seared Salmon “Mediterranean Style”.
The above sets include equally inviting starter, soup, and dessert choices like French-Style Baked Snails, Pan-seared Foie Gras, French Onion Soup, and French Apple Tarte Tatin with Vanilla Ice Cream and Homemade Caramel Sauce.
Watching Arthur manage the kitchen and staff, polish silverware and mop floors before customers arrive, and pause to greet his wife and two-year-old son truly offers a timeless taste of the traditional, family-run French bistro, transported to Taichung together with genuine French cooking.
