In 1992, railway engineer Luka brings his wife and son to help build a scenic railroad that links Serbia and Bosnia. When Bosnia declares independence and war eruptes, this family undergoes major changes. Luka's son joines the army, his wife runs off with someone else and Luka falls in love with a hostage, Sabaha. When the civil war ends, a UN hostage exchange program is carried out and Sabaha must return to her own country so that his son can come home. Facing a choice between love and family, what will Luka choose?
